Old vs New

There is something to be said for new photographic techniques.  They can do so much with so little.  They can be manipulated easily and can often make the lowliest of photographer look good (I'm looking at you Instagram). But can anything really top the old emulsion and silver of a nice black and white photo taken by the hands of a master that has spent so many hours on their craft?

Here is a great example of what I am talking about. The Los Angeles Times own Jay L. Clendenin took a series of photographs of the U.S.A.'s 2012 Olympiads before they headed out to the games in London this year.  He took one photo using modern equipment and one using an old fashioned 4×5-inch field camera paired with a 100+-year-old Petzval lens.

I think you'll agree that his work is amazing, whether it's with new or old equipment.  To see what I am talking about click here.

L5R

For those of you out there that know me, know that I love Legend of the Five Rings (L5R) and the Roll and Keep rpg system.  This world of magical samurai has one of the richest and in depth worlds you will ever play in and it is always evolving due to the weekly stories posted on their main site.  The stories are influenced and molded by the card players at the regular tournaments held for the card game.  Players, well the good players, get some say in what their favorite Rokugani heroes do in this constantly evolving world.

So after me and my friends finished up our last D&D 4e game we decided to start a game of L5R. The GM and myself are the only players of this particular game that have played the L5R RPG before.  And it's great!  I love playing these games with new players.  They always bring a fresh perspective to the game and in teaching it to them I understand the system a little bit better then before.

This group has been together for a long time now and we've played many games together.  Not everyone in this group has played in every game I've done with this group. Sometimes we had to switch out a player due to scheduling conflicts or whatnot. We've played mainly D&D 4e together, but also CthuluTech, Werewolf (NWoD), Scion, Shadowrun, Savage Worlds: Deadland, and even go as far back as to have played D&D 3.5 before 4e came out.  Now most of us have been roleplaying a lot longer than that, but this core group has been together a long time for one group.

Everyone in this group listens to podcasts, visits forums, or reads a lot of articles on roleplaying and gaming. One of the players had the idea to put together a podcast of our actual gameplay.  I've never been on a podcast before, but it's a ton of fun.

The players are Nick as a Bayushi Bushi, Joe as a Shosuro Infiltrator (shh, don't tell anyone), Matt as a Kitsuki Investigator, Tom as a Yoritomo Shugenja, myself as a Hiruma Bushi and Colin as the GM. Without further ado, here are the podcasts. You can also find them at http://hotzp-azif.podomatic.com/ or on iTunes. We will try to put out new content every week, but as with everything it may not always be possible.

The first couple of sessions is our characters competing at the Topaz Championship.
There's Action! There's Adventure! There's Drunken Samurai!

Enjoy!

I really like this pose of Wonder Woman because I can see Superman making the same pose:

New Blog

So I'm going to try out this whole blogging thing. This is mostly going to be about gaming, tv, movies, and comic books.  Because those are the things that I like, deal with it. ;-)
